What is The Webster Technique in Hopkins MN?

Chiropractic Hopkins MN Pregnant Woman

Dr. Larry Webster a professor at Life Chiropractic University, developed the Webster Breech Turning Technique. He taught this safe, gentle, non-invasive method to hundreds of chiropractic students and the technique has been in use for decades in Hopkins MN. To date, there have been over 18 articles published showing the effectiveness of the Webster technique in the third trimester of pregnancy.

Following his death, the method name was shortened to the Webster technique. Dr. Bill Schumacher was trained in the Webster technique by one of his hand-picked instructors Dr. Claudia Anrig and is proficient in both the Webster technique and the advanced Webster technique.

How does it work in Hopkins MN?

The Webster technique is a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment, which reduces interference to the nervous system, improving the function of the pelvic muscles and ligaments leading to the reduction of constraint of the woman’s uterus allowing the fetus the best opportunity to be positioned for a healthy birth.

The pelvis can go into a biomechanical dysfunction with a sacral and or ilium fixation creating aberrant or abnormal joint functioning. This causes muscular and ligament imbalance and can contribute to the following symptoms.

  • Low back pain
  • Symphysis pubis pain
  • Sciatica
  • Lower abdominal pain
  • Asymmetry, problems leading to intrauterine constraint

The pelvis is similar to a basketball ring and your muscles and ligaments are like the net. If the basketball ring/pelvis is not round, the basketball/baby cannot descend and the muscles and ligaments will cause a twist or constraint on the baby.

A balanced state, though, optimizes fetal positioning and baby’s developmental space. In fact, The Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics reported that the Webster Technique had an 82% success rate of babies turning heads-down.

When should I be evaluated?

Dr. Schumacher recommends a minimum of two visits per month for first and second-trimester mothers to evaluate biomechanical imbalance. Beginning the seventh month, he suggests being evaluated with the Webster technique to minimize the potential for intrauterine constraint. Visits may go weekly or per patient needs in the last 4 to 6 weeks.

The frequency of care for the Webster technique is dependent upon when the constraint position is first discovered. Typically, the technique is performed evaluating the patient 2 to 3 times a week over a 2 week period. Once the baby is in the proper position, the frequency is decreased to weekly visits to ensure proper positioning prior to the birthing process.

If the mother is in the last two weeks of her term or within days of the due date, she may need to be evaluated daily until baby positioning changes occur.
